The Cleveland Clinic is a multidisciplinary medical center based in Cleveland/Ohio.It is known worldwide for its first-class cardiological department.
The task was to connect the newly built service center with the clinic buildings, some of which are situated a little further away.
The objective was to automate the laborious manual transportation of linen, waste, food, medical equipment and similar by using AGV. In the service center roller containers are filled with linen or food, for example, and are then staged for being picked up by the AGV, which collects this container and transports it into the appropriate clinic building.
Return deliveries with dirty laundry or waste are handled the same way.
For navigating the vehicles, coupled navigation with referencing via magnets was chosen.
Other than in case of laser navigation, this permits a compact design of the vehicles. Therefore, they can move in under the roller containers completely, lifting them for transportation.
Due to the fact that the final customer permitted us to participate in the planning phase, the close cooperation with Metso, as well as the tests performed beforehand using our simulation tool, the commissioning time on site could be reduced to a minimum.
Advantages of an AGV
In this application, the use of the AGV has resulted in a harmonious goods transport over long distances without collisions. Previously, heavy rolling carts had to be moved via ramps that were sometimes very steep. Now, the AGV does this work both in an ergonomically safe and efficient way.
