FAQ

Interesting Facts About Data Center Logistics

A mobile robot picks up the server rack at the transfer point – at the loading dock or in the staging area – and moves it driverlessly to its target position in the server room. The NAVIOS fleet manager issues the transport order, plans the route and coordinates the handover. The rack never has to be moved by hand, not even in the narrow cold aisles of modern data centers.

DS Automotion covers four common rack standards: the AMADEUS rack handles ORv2 and ORv3 racks from the Open Compute Project as well as HPR racks, while the RACKMOVER handles ORW racks (Open Rack Wide). ORv2 and ORv3 are widely deployed in modern data centers, HPR racks reach particularly high power densities, and ORW racks are designed for large IT capacities in hyperscale environments.

Yes. NAVIOS is fully VDA 5050 compliant – the manufacturer-independent interface between mobile robots and higher-level control – which means the installation can be extended with compatible vehicles from other manufacturers at any time. OPC UA, Modbus TCP, ProfiNet, MQTT and a REST API are available in addition. The systems are IPv6 ready.

The two AGVs cover different rack standards and weight classes. The AMADEUS rack is the compact vehicle for ORv2, ORv3 and HPR racks: 2.2 tonnes payload, up to 1.8 m/s, 350 mm lifting height, contour-based navigation. The RACKMOVER is the heavy-duty AGV for ORW racks: up to 6 tonnes payload, up to 1.0 m/s, 120 mm lifting height, hybrid navigation and patented auto-alignment.

Data center logistics covers all internal transport and material flow processes around server racks and IT infrastructure: bringing new racks in from the loading dock, staging them before installation, moving them into the white space, relocating them between server areas, and replacing or removing them. It differs from conventional intralogistics through valuable, sensitive loads and severely limited room to manoeuvre.

Usually not. Contour-based localisation orients itself on the existing structural contours and needs no additional navigation infrastructure, so server racks can be moved without adapting the existing installation. In the cooling aisles the RACKMOVER additionally uses optical guidance, which keeps it exactly on track where space is tightest.

Through contour-based LiDAR localisation. The RACKMOVER combines it with optical guidance in the cold aisle and a patented auto-alignment function: sensors detect the smallest angular deviations between vehicle and ORW rack and correct them in real time. Automatic fine positioning at the target secures the handover even where space is very limited.

Through the NAVIOS fleet manager. Orders are created automatically via sensors, by comparing target and actual stock levels or within defined time windows – and manually at a touch terminal, directly on the vehicle terminal or through an ERP connection. The NAVIOS Cockpit shows vehicles and rack locations in a web-based, multilingual interface, with user rights manageable via LDAP.

Several safety sensors monitor the vehicle's surroundings continuously; the AMADEUS rack uses protected, integrated laser scanners with 360° all-round coverage. The purpose-built load handling system and the automatic alignment reduce the risk of damage to sensitive IT hardware. Because every transport is logged by the system, the automation also supports access control inside the data center.
